Ask any cartoonist how they create at least their favorite part of the comic and they'll tell you it adds color. It is horrible, tedious and time-consuming. But not anymore. In this short tutorial, you will learn how to quickly add color and shading lines to your draft. You will also learn some shortcuts that can help you in larger graphics projects.
Photoshop CS6
Open your black and white artwork and make sure the lines are in a separate layer than the background layer, as shown in the example. This method is easiest for comic-style works, but can be adapted to other styles. We'll be adding color to the bottom layer, so make sure it's chosen.
Select the background layer and select the Magic Wand Tool (W). Make sure the Settings are: Tolerance: 0, Anti-alias: not checked, Contiguity and sample All layers: checked.
Click on the area of the work you want to fill with color
Now do not fill the color of the area! You will find that army ants are within the boundaries of line art. We want the color to fill a slightly larger area. To fix this, go to Select > Modify > Extend and select somewhere between 3-5 pixels. This will ensure that there is no white left side when we fill in.
Use the option + Shift + Del key (or press Alt + Shift + Backspace for Windows) to fill the area with the desired foreground color.
Continue this for each area of the artwork until it is completely colored. The magic wand did not select any area correctly, which can be quickly selected and filled with the lasso tool
Now the shadow. Pick the lasso tool (L) and create a shape that will become a shadow. You want to give tricks and shapes to the object, so be sure to choose to give that impression, as shown below
Pick Paint Bucket Tool (G), make sure mode is set to multiply, Opacity: 65% (or lower), tolerance: 0, Continuous: checked, with unserrated and all layers: Not checked.
Now with 50% gray or light foreground color, fill the paint bucket selection. Continue with steps 5 and 6 until the color of your unit has a hopeful shade
